Understanding your AI Visibility Score (SBA)
Understand your AI Visibility Score (SBA): what Semantic Brand Alignment means, how it's scored, and what to do with a high score and zero citations.
Last updated 28 days ago
The short version
Your AI Visibility Score measures how much the language AI assistants use when talking about your space sounds like your brand. The higher the score, the more AI answers are leaning on words, phrases, and ideas that belong to you.
It's scored from 0 to 100%. Higher is generally better.
What "SBA" actually means
SBA stands for Semantic Brand Alignment. That's a technical name for a simple idea:
When an AI describes your industry, how often does it reach for your words?
Every brand has a vocabulary it could "own" β the terms, product names, phrases, and concepts that are distinctly yours. SBA checks how much of that vocabulary actually shows up when AI tools answer questions about your space.
A high score means AI answers are full of language tied to you.
A low score means AI is describing your space using everyone else's words, not yours.
An analogy
Think about the word "search." When most people say "I'll search it," they really mean "I'll Google it." Google has come to own that word. The brand and the activity blurred together.
SBA measures how far along you are toward owning your words in the same way β except the audience isn't people, it's the AI assistants that increasingly answer questions for them.
Picture standing in a room where AI tools are constantly answering questions about your industry. SBA is how often their word choices sound like they came straight out of your world.
How the number is calculated
In plain terms:
Brand-vocabulary words the AI actually used Γ· all the brand-vocabulary words it could have used
If your brand vocabulary has 100 distinctive words and phrases, and AI answers use 40 of them, your SBA is roughly 40%. You don't need to do this math yourself β we calculate it for you β but that's the shape of it.
How to read your score
These bands are guidelines, not hard rules β what's "good" varies by industry and how crowded your space is.
The one catch: high score, zero citations
A high SBA is good news, but it isn't the whole story.
You can have a high SBA with zero citations. That means:
AI is speaking your language β but it isn't naming you or linking to you.
It's like being at a party where everyone is enthusiastically repeating your ideas, but no one remembers they came from you. The influence is there; the credit isn't.
When you see this pattern, read it as opportunity, not failure. The groundwork is done β AI already associates the right vocabulary with your space. The next step is converting that into actual mentions and citations, so the recognition follows the language.
What to do with this score
Low SBA? Focus on publishing content that defines your space in your own terms, so AI starts learning your vocabulary.
High SBA, low citations? Focus on getting cited β clear sourcing, authoritative pages, and content AI tools want to reference directly.
High SBA and citations? You're in a strong position. Keep reinforcing it and watch for competitors trying to reclaim the vocabulary.
